On the digital essay
I went to a talk last week at the LRB Bookshop, where Will Self, Nicholas Spice, Helen Jeffrey and Dan Franklin debated the merits of the so-called “digital essay”. I wrote another piece for The Literary Platform about it.
Nicholas Spice, publisher of the London Review of Books, doesn’t pull any punches. In the middle of the discussion, and after a few defences of the concept of a ‘digital essay’, he asked: “Does visualising words weaken how they work on our brain?”
It’s here. I’d love to know what you think – were you there? Have you read the essay? Did I give it a fair hearing?
