The Living Lab (2022-23)

The brief

Energy Systems Catapult (ESC) needed content design and copy for a new updated website for the Living Lab, a network of volunteers who answer surveys and test new technology to show how energy is used in real-life settings.

ESC wanted to increase sign-ups, and get more volunteers connecting their smart energy devices to the lab, so they could gather data on how they used energy to heat their homes and charge their EVs.

The process

I conducted an audit of existing content, then spoke to engineers, researchers and energy specialists to understand requirements and technical capabilities to work out what content was required, when, and how.

With all that info, I sketched a process whereby non-technical participants could accurately describe their current energy usage and connect their smart devices to share readings with the Lab automatically.

Once we’d designed and agreed a content map and user flow spanning web, emails and mobile apps, I wrote the web copy to explain energy technology, promote new prototypes and the Lab’s testing facility to non-technical users.

The new Living Lab sign-up portal launched in 2022, with the rest of the website for sign-in users following in 2023.
