Freelance

Energy Systems Catapult (ESC) wanted to increase sign-ups and get more volunteers connecting smart energy devices to their Living Lab, so they could gather data on how people used energy to heat their homes and charge their EVs.

Approach

I was commissioned to provide content design and copy for a new updated website for the Living Lab, a network of volunteers who answer surveys and test new technology to show how energy is used in real-life settings.

First, I did an audit of existing content, then spoke to engineers, researchers and energy specialists to understand requirements and technical capabilities to work out what content was required, when, and how.

With all that info, I sketched a process whereby non-technical participants could accurately describe their current energy usage and connect their smart devices to share readings with the Lab automatically.

Once we’d designed and agreed a content map and user flow spanning web, emails and mobile apps, I wrote the web copy to explain energy technology, promote new prototypes and the Lab’s testing facility to non-technical users.

“Help shape the future of energy.”

Result

The new Living Lab sign-up portal launched in 2022, with the rest of the website for sign-in users following in 2023.

As a result, the team smashed their sign-up targets, as thousands more joined the Lab. The new, improved website also made it easier for people to connect smart devices themselves, cutting team overheads and costs .
